The 5th Annual American Red Cross NO SHOW Holiday Ball!

Since July 1, 2009, our on-call volunteers have responded to nine single family fires. Every 2 seconds, someone needs life-saving blood. Every 3 hours, the Red Cross helps a military family in Onslow County with an emergency message. There are at least 4 CPR/First Aid classes being taught every month at the chapter on Ruth Street. Your generous donations will not pay for fancy napkins, pine boughs, or chocolate mouse. Please don't come, but join the folks who will ignore the band, the need for a designated driver, the "spoofy" hairdo, soggy green beans, the disco dance ball, and don't like banquet food anyway! We'll send you a list of everyone who "missed the ball." We need to raise $10,000. Contributions are 100% tax deductible!...>> RSVP

Holiday Mail for Heroes is Back Again!

Send a touch of home to the real heroes of America and their families. For the third year in a row the American Red Cross is teaming up with Pitney Bowes for the Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign. Participate in the campaign by sending holiday cards with personal messages to a special post office box. The cards will then be sorted and delievered to military bases, hospitals, veterans hospitals and other locations durring the holiday. Prepare for Flu Season

To help prevent the spread of germs: wash hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Avoid or minimize contact with people who are sick (a minimum three feet distancing is recommended). Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Cover your mouth and nose with tissues when you cough and sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow. Stay away from others as much as possible when you are sick. For more information visit RedCross.org

September is Preparedness Month

and those of us living in Onslow County should take the time to review our Disaster Preparedness Kits and our Evacuation Plans. One never knows when they might be affected by a fire, tornado, tropical storm, or other disaster. Take responsibility for you and your family, and discuss your plans.

Did you know that 96% of American Red Cross workers are volunteers?
Volunteers are the heart of the American Red Cross!

Our organization is led by volunteers, the minority in our organization are those that get a paycheck.
Red Cross volunteers contributed 32326 hours to our community in 2007. Paid staff contributed
less than 6000 hours this fiscal year.

Our organization is one of the greatest benefactors of volunteer service in this country. Ninety-
six percent of Red Cross staff in the United States is volunteers. In my office the percentage
is greater. We only have 3.3 FTEs but we have about 150 volunteers.

Volunteers in the Onslow County Community have many moments to be proud of. Just look around
you at what each has given. It is hard to imagine what kind of community we would have without
you and the services you provide.

In our busy lives, nothing is more valuable than time. It follows that volunteers—people who
choose to give their time to make this a better community—are very valuable indeed

Inspire By Example --- truly reflects the power that volunteers have to inspire the people they
help and to inspire others to serve.
